Imphal: Health & IPR Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh said that strengthening media is necessary to enlighten the public. Minister was speaking as Chief Guest on the occasion of the launching programme of The Manipur News (A Manipuri Daily). The launching function was held at Hotel Imphal, North AOC.
Minister, Dr. Sapam Ranjan said that there were sign of apprehensions reported to the media houses when social media started widely popular. But there is still charm for reading newspaper. The habit of reading newspaper at the first morning still exists even if there is a new option of social media platform, he added.
Minister also maintained that, proper verification of news reports and other incidents occurred, are required before inclusion as a news items. Media plays a crucial role to enlighten the public in many spheres. It also plays communicative role amongst communities. Information and opinion about any happening in the state is also narrated though media, Ranjan informed.
Speaking, as Functional President of the occasion, President, Editor’s Guild Manipur, Khogendra Khomdram said that the profession of media is a challenging one. One need to go a long journey to achieve a feat in the line of professional journalism. One should not forget their mentors and past experiences, he added.
Speaking as Guest of Honour, President, All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union, AMWJU, Bijoy Kakchingtabam expressed that there seems to have a perception of threat to the freedom of press and media these days.
Editor, The Manipur News, T. Chandragupta, Senior journalists, representatives of the media houses and others also attended the launching occasion. (DIPR)
