Poppy plantation destroyed in Kangpokpi of Manipur, arms recovered

Imphal: A combined team of security forces conducted a poppy plantation destruction drive at Makui and Langka villages, Kangpokpi district of Manipur between Thursday and Saturday.

During the drive, 15 acres of illegal poppy plantation were destroyed in Makui village and 12 acres were destroyed in Langka village, Manipur Police Control Room said on Saturday.

During the last 24 hours, the situation in the state was tense but under control with sporadic incidents of firing and congregation of protestors, it added.

Search operations and area domination were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi, Kakching and Thoubal districts.

One 9mm Carbine Machine Gun, one Carbine Machine Gun empty Magazine, one Pt. 22 Revolver, one 12-inch Single Bore Barrel Gun, two Lathode live shells, three 9mm live rounds, two Pt. 22 live rounds, two SBBL live cartridges, three country-made Single Barrel Guns, two Baofeng Motorola Radio Sets (one with antenna) were recovered from Kangpokpi district.

Movement of 252 and 416 vehicles along NH-37 and NH-2 respectively with essential items have been ensured. Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles, the police control room said.

A total of 142 checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur and police detained 310 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the state, it added.

It appeals to the general public not to believe in rumours and be aware of false videos. “Any circulation of unfounded videos etc may be confirmed from the rumour-free number – 9233522822 of Central Control room”.

It also appeals to the public to return the ‘looted arms, ammunition and explosives’ to the police or nearest security forces immediately.
