Arms, ammos recovered, poppy destroyed in Manipur

Imphal: Security forces have recovered Arms and ammunition from Imphal West and Churachandpur districts on Friday as they conducted search operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Imphal West, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Imphal East districts.

Two arms (AK 56 & Pistol), two explosives (hand grenade No. 36 with detonator), 50 7.62 mm ammunition, 100 12 bore cartridges, 12 ammunitions marked EC4 and four Pumpi Gun with explosives were recovered from Moidangpok Maning Leinganglok area, Imphal West district.

One arm (9mm pistol), three explosives (HE hand grenades without detonator), one mortar shell and one lathode shell were also recovered from Sajirok village, Imphal West district.

Two arms (.303 Rifles) along with five ammunition were recovered from the Churachandpur district.

During the last 24 hours, the situation in the state was tense but under control with sporadic incidents of the congregation of protestors, Manipur Police Control Room said on Friday.

On Thursday, one Leichombam Lanngam Meitei, 61, son of late Leichombam Bira Singh of Leimaram Mamang Leikai, who had been taking shelter at Thingkai Khullen since the onset of the current conflict under the care of the village’s chief, was handed over to security force and later reunited with his relatives at Leimram Relief Camp, it added.

On Tuesday and and Wednesday, a combined team of security forces and the Forest department destructed poppy cultivation covering a total area of 31 acres at Phalee Tora-Champhung hill range, Ukhrul district, it said.

The movement of 122 vehicles along NH-37 with essential items has been ensured.

Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles, the police control room said.
