Imphal: Bishnupur district celebrated the 69th Wildlife Week, 2023 under the theme Our Wildlife, Our Pride – Awareness Cum Prize Distribution- at Kiyamba Ningshing Shanglen, Bishnupur on Friday.
As part of the celebration, deputy commissioner, Lourembam Bikram flagged off a Mobile Anti-Poaching Campaign which will be conducted in and around Loktak Lake.
The deputy commissioner said Earth is a unique planet as it is capable of sustaining life with water and oxygen as the main sources of life. He stressed that the sense of responsibility and consciousness in every one of us towards conserving wildlife can help in sustaining the environment.
Schools and other educational institutes should instill in their student a responsibility towards the environment, he said.
He pointed out that disturbance in the food chain may result in a serious environmental issue. Every individual should contribute to the conservation of forests through responsible steps.
Superintendent of police K. Meghachandra Singh stressed on the importance of creating awareness of the issue among young students and said that such awareness campaign will help the young students understand the need for conserving wildlife and be aware of the Wildlife Protection Act.
He said that poaching of birds and animals should be discouraged. Highlighting certain laws under the Wildlife Protection Act, he said that killing, poaching, poisoning, or torturing animals are cognizable offenses punishable under the law.
Prizes for painting, essay, and slogan writing competitions were distributed to the winners. Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to the wildlife rescuers during the celebration.
Divisional Forest Officer, Bishnupur Forest Division, Dr. Rebika Soibam, officials concerned, and students among others attended the celebration.
