Social stigma of deafness should be avoided: Minister Dr Ranjan

Imphal: World Deaf Day, 2023, was observed on Monday under the theme, “Ear and Hearing Care For All” at Hotel Classic Grande, here.

The observation was organised by The National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services, Manipur.

Health minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh said hearing loss can be controlled if taken preventive cares of our ears. “We should have the habit of ear care right from the early stage. Social stigma of deafness should be avoided.”

Hearing loss is curable depending on its seriousness. A branch of medical science known as Otorhinolaryngology is dedicated for the study of diseases of the ear, nose and throat, the minister said.

He said with the limited budget of the state government is doing its best to improve the Health sector. He appealed to all the concerned medical professionals to help out the problem of deafness by giving awareness and consultative services with sincerity.

More funds will be proposed to deal with the problems of deafness in the state. There is room for improvement, he said.

Health Services Manipur director Dr. Kh. Sasheekumar Mangang said there is shortage of hearing aids. This may be due to the high costs of the equipment charged by the manufacturing company. Hearing kits at the affordable prices should be made available so that people with hearing problem can purchase the kits, he informed.

Hearing aids were also distributed to the district health authorities specially Thoubal and Bisnupur districts as a part of the programme.

State Mission director, NHM, Manipur, Dr. Somorjit Ningombam, HOD, Otorhinolaryngology, RIMS. Dr. Th. Sudhiranjan, HOD Otorhinolaryngology, JNIMS Dr. Dhakeswar Singh Potsangbam, officials and staff of the Health department and others attended the programme.
