Resign Powerless CM: Students

Imphal: Agitating students urged chief minister N. Biren Singh to resign if he has no power on policies and on Law and Order to safeguard Manipur and its people.

A protest rally was staged in Imphal under the banner “Protest for justice for Hijam Linithoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit on Friday.

A student protestor, Martin told reporters that students strongly condemn the brutality of armed forces against Meitei students who raise voice for justice.

Students from various schools gathered at Khagempalli Huidrom Leikai ground and headed towards Keishampat Junction along Mayai Lambi road. The students were blocked at Keishampat junction by the state forces.

Martin said the students do not want violence and strongly condemned the extreme action of security forces of September 27 at Moirangkhom.

He said the students are ready to face the consequences if the security forces’ intension is to give grievous injuries to the students by firing lead pellets, tear gas shells and mock bombs.

He said during their meeting with the chief minister, they were told that ‘Article 355 is imposed in Manipur and he has not overriding power on policy programmes including law and order’.

Martin said Biren should have resigned if he has no power to safeguard the students.

The rally continued towards Tiddim road and after crossing Kwakeithel Junction the rally ended at the initial position after marching along Khagempalli road.

The protestor raised slogans ‘we want justice’, ‘we condemned brutal assault towards students’, ‘long live Manipur’, Justice Delay justice denied’ and others.

Keishampat Keisham Leikai, Apunba Meira Paibi and Manipur Central Youth Club also staged sit-in-protest against the brutal killing of the two students by Kuki miscreants.

Protestors demonstrated with placards embedded “Down with narco terrorist”, “Naked parade- national issue, killing innocent students- national silence” and others.
