Imphal: Twenty-four hour public curfew imposed over failure to convene emergency Assembly session escalated tension in Imphal City on Saturday.
The curfew was imposed by Coordinating Committee of 24 Assembly Coonstituencies and MACKMAL, Union of Social Upliftment and CFC, Thongju.
In a meeting of the committee held on July 27 resolved to demand the state government to convene emergency Assembly session by August 2 and adopt resolution to protect Manipur’s integrity, oppose separate administration demand.
The resolution mentioned that the Manipur Legislative Assembly should be forwarded for discussion in the ongoing Parliamentary session.
Main roads of Imphal city were seen blocked by the bandh supporters with burning tires, wooden blocks and others.
Huge number of bandh supporters came on streets and blocked roads including Tiddim road, Ayangpalli road, Maiyai Lambi, Uripok road, Sagolband road and others.
Earlier, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on July 28 assured Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Co-ordinating Committee for Peace to convene special session of Manipur Legislative Assembly in a week.
Amid the pressure from the people and CSOs to convene emergency assembly session to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state, Manipur Cabinet recommended to the Governor Anusuiya Uikey for summoning the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 21.
Due to the public curfew tension escalated in the city and state Home department immediately cancelled curfew relaxation from 10.30 am on Saturday.
The Home department has clamped unrelaxed full curfew on Sunday.
