Imphal: At least 17 abandoned houses of the Manipur conflict were damaged after fire broke out on Monday night at Kanan Veng and Kekru Villa, Imphal West under the jurisdiction of Imphal Police station.
The fire started burning at around 9 pm from a rented house located at Kanan Veng.
It was suspected to be started from electric short circuit, said police. As most of the houses were abandoned due to the present crisis, the fire spreaded and damaged at least another 16 houses located in the area.
Different communities of people are settling in the surrounding area including non-Manipuris. As the fire spread, many of the residents of the area were seen carrying out their properties whatever they could.
People of the area including others coming from different areas tried to put out the fire. A team of Manipur fire service came and extinguished the fire at around midnight.
No casualty was reported.
