Electricity employees launch strike demanding pay hike

Imphal: Manipur electricity employees launched strike demanding implementation of 7th Revision of Pay, 2019 staging sit-ins at Keishampat Power House, and at two corporate offices of Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) and Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL), here on Wednesday.

The strike was taken up under the umbrella of joint action committee of Manipur Electricity Employees’ Union (MEEU), Power Engineers Services Association, MSPCL (PESA) and MSPDCL officers Association (MOA).

MEEU general secretary T. Shyamnagor said as the state faces Covid-19 crisis with imposition of curfew the employees under the two companies of power department MSPDCL and MSPCL work hard to supply power. However, the 7th Central Pay, which has been implemented for other department employees, is yet to be implemented for the employees under the power department undertaking companies, he added.

The employees of the electricity department had served an ultimatum to the government regarding the fulfilling of the demand by July 31 and to initiated strike on August 1. After considering the pandemic and for the public the strike was not launched, he said.

The employee bodies had many times talked with the government. However, the pay has not been revised. “We have been postponing agitations for the sake of the people and in view of the sufferings due to the pandemic. As we cannot tolerate anymore we have decided to take up various forms of agitations,” Shyamnagor said.

“Today employees in mass staged sit-ins and locked corporate offices. If the state government fails to give a positive response today we will take up closure of prepaid counters and division offices will be locked from tomorrow. We will launch cease work strike if the voice of the employees is not listened. During the cease work strike the employees will adopt non-of power outage till the implementation of the 7th Pay. If the government keeps failing to fulfil the demand we may take up power outage agitation,” he added.

He said the date of power outage agitation will be announced at appropriate time. He appeals the public to cooperate.
