Body of man lost in Imphal river found

Imphal: ‘Curfew violator’ who jumped into Imphal river while trying to flee from police patrol during curfew fished out near Sanjenthong bridge on Tuesday by the combined rescue team.

The 26 years old boy Fariz had been missing since Sunday evening he jumped into the river.

Fariz, a resident of Sangaiyumpham, was presently staying at a rented house located at KR Lane.

A combined team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with Porompat Police had been searching along the stretch of Imphal river.

Superintendent of police, Imphal East, N Herojit told reporters here that the missing person has been fished out from the Imphal river near Sanjenthong bridge by the search team.

The combined search team recovered the body at about 11 am.

Herojit said since the imposed of curfew, some people of KR Lane were seen playing football in grounds of the area. Police team frequently cautioned the curfew violators however some who were playing football used to jump into Imphal River and crossed the other side of the river towards Kangla eastern side. As they do not commit any sort of harsh crime the police team warned the violators and came out usually, he added.

Similar patrol was conducted and the people including Fariz were playing at a ground located at KR Lane near river bank. They jumped into the river and as usual they crossed the river but a report was received at about 6 pm of the day at Porompat police station that one of the curfew violators who jumped into the river has been missing. Since then the combind team had been searching the body day and night, he added.

He said it is unfortunate that Fariz drown in the river due to high current and high water level but playing football amid curfew is violation of curfew.

Herojit said when the police team tried to take the body for post mortem some of the locals of the area tried to stop the police team.

He appealed the people to cooperate as police team are also putting effort day and night to find out the missing person. Showing incorporation to a police who is doing duty is against the law and any person who are against the law will be taken necessary actions, he added.
