Mirabai opens India’s Olympic medal account with Silver

Imphal: Manipur native weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has won Silver medal in Tokyo Olympics for 49 kg category on Saturday and opened medal account for India.

Mirabai lifted 87 kg in Snatch and lifted 115 kg in Clean and Jerk. She lifted a total of 202 kg.

China’s Hou Zhihui lifted of 94kg in Snatch and 116 kg in Clean and Jerk. She lifted a total of 210 kg.

“This is the proud moment for Manipur and people of the nation. Well done Mirabai,” Ng. Chandramani, an 86 years old man from Imphal said.

The lone Judokan of the Indian contingent in the Olympic, Shushila Likmabam lost her contest to Hungarian Eva Csernoviczki.

Manipur chief minister had announced a sum of Rs 1.2 crore for Gold medalist, Rs 1 crore for silver medallist and Rs 75 lakh for Bronze medalist, for Tokyo Olympians from the state.

A sum of Rs 25 lakh each was announced for the qualified five participants from the state.

“What a day! What a win for India. Mirabai Chanu wins Silver in Weightlifting Women’s 49kg category. India has opens its tally in Tokyo Olympics. You have made the country proud today,” Biren writes on his Facebook wall.
