Brown sugar worth over Rs 8 crore recovered in Manipur

Imphal: Anti-smuggling unit of Customs Division, Imphal on Thursday recovered 8.550 kg of Brown Sugar from a Tata truck in Imphal East of Manipur.

The drug was found from the driver’s seat of the 12-wheeler truck bearing registration number NL 01 L-8966 when officers of the Anti-smuggling unit intercepted the truck acting on the basis of a ‘specific information’.

The truck was driven by a person who was Mohd Tamijur Rahaman, 31, son Md Abdul Rahaman, resident of Paobitek Mayai Leikai, Paobitek, Wangoi, Imphal West.

The accused was intercepted at Mantripukhri, along NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur road), Imphal East. The drug was packed in eleven packets wrapped with adhesive tape. A case hss been registered under the relevant provisions of NDPS Act, 1985, superintendent (A/S) Customs Division, Imphal P. Roben Singh said on Friday.

Tamijur along the Brown Sugar and the truck which was used as a conveyance for transporting the contraband drugs has been seized under the relevant provisions of NDPS Act, 1985, the senior officer said.

The value of the seized contraband drug along with the truck is collectively found to be Rs 8,75,00,000, he added.
