Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has declared that financial assistance of Rs 15,000 will be given to each local club annually under state department of social welfare in order to root out drugs.
Biren was speaking through a video clip released on Saturday in connection the “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” observed under the theme ‘Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives’.

Biren said the objectives for observing the day is to discourage drug usage and other psychoactive substances and to promote on health issues with a drug free society.
In the present society using of drugs and alcohols has been increasing and even witnessed among the school going students which is the worst impact of drugs in the society. Since past de-addiction centres has been running by NGOs and private owned groups, however a government run de-addiction will be available as construction is undergoing at Sunusiphai, Bishnnupur district, the chief minister said.
To fight for a drug free society the state government has made a policy “Manipur State Policy on Psychoactive Substances, 2019” even the present government has been taking initiatives under ‘Nasa Mukh Bharat’, he added.
Under the present government’s and since the launching of ‘War on drugs’ policy a total of 1321 cases related to drugs has been registered; 1735 people in connection with drugs has been arrested; over 10,000 acres of poppy has been destructed, over 1,400 kilogram of brown sugars has been destroyed and many laboratory used to manufacture drugs has been destroyed, Biren said.
He appreciated people of Ukhrul, Senapati and others for taking initiatives in destroying poppy cultivation by their own without the assistance of state government. Under state horticulture department many alternatives steps to avoid poppy plantation have been taken up, he added.
To root out drugs for a drug free society collective effort from both the government and public is needed.
