Imphal: Women vendors of Manipur’s Khwairamband Ima Keithel protested against shutting down of three Ima Keithels and adjoining temporary women markets for 10 days in wake of the second wave of Covid-19.
Following the issuance of the government order to shut the market centre on Wednesday, tension erupted among the vendors of Ima Keithel as other big shops and establishments in the Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar were allowed to open under certain conditions.
The order passed by the government for containing the spread of Covid-19 in the state is bias in nature, president of Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham amadi Saktam Kanba Lup, Thoudam ongbi Shanti said.
Since Tuesday the women vendors have been vending by following the Covid appropriate behaviour such as wearing mask, maintaining six feet distance and opening only 50 percent of the vendors on rotation basis, she said.
Many vendors have not yet recovered the financial loss occurred during the previous lockdown, she said adding that the ten days shutting down of the Ima Keithels will lead to suffer further.
The vendors appealed to the state government to allow the vendors to open by maintaining certain protocols or to shut down together with other shops and establishments in the market area.
