Imphal: Chandel and Tengnoupal Battalions of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) foiled smuggling of illegal goods in Chandel and Tengnoupal districts on Monday.
Troops of Chandel Battalion intercepted five vehicles and seven individuals near Angbreshu and New Songyang, Chandel District. On thorough checking, illegally smuggled goods worth Rs 1.36 crore were recovered, the Assam Rifles said.
The troops of Tengnoupal Battalion intercepted two individuals in the jungle near Tengnoupal who immediately escaped from the site. On thorough checking of the area, imported cigarettes, textiles and footwears worth Rs 3.26 crore were recovered.
Recovered items along with apprehended individuals and vehicles have been handed over to Chandel Police station, forest and customs departments respectively, the Assam Rifles said.
