Leishemba calls for special task force to protect archaeological sites

Imphal: Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, Rajya Sabha MP on Monday submitted a demand on the floor of the ongoing parliament session during the zero hour to set up a special task force to conserve and protect archaeological sites and historical monuments.

The Titular king, Leishemba informed the House that to protect and conserve the archaeological site and historical monuments of Manipur, ‘Manipur State Archaeology’(MSA) was established in 1978. MSA has been researching in finding out archaeological sites and historical monuments, he added.

Under Manipur Ancient and Historical Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remain Act 1976, MSA has been protecting a total of 63 archaeological site and historical monuments, Leishemba said.

Out of the total archaeological sites and historical monuments some are located at international border areas.

He cited Maharaja Chandrakriti located at Behiang, Churachandpur district and megalith erected at Mao among others.

In order to protect such sites against illegal land encroachers, a ‘special task force’ is required, he said.
