Imphal: N. Biren Singh government is working towards bringing gender equality and inclusive development in Manipur, social welfare minister O. Henry said at the celebration of International Women’s Day held at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, here on Monday.
Henry gave his best wishes to all the women of the state on the occasion of the women’s day. Highlighting welfare schemes introduced by the BJP led government, he said, the government is looking forward to introduce various programs and schemes for women empowerment in the state.
The status of Manipuri women is relatively higher compared with women of other regions and our society has given due respect and space for women since ages. Manipuri women have been in forefront on every issue such as social and political issues. There is a need for awareness and campaigns about women’s rights and empowerment, he said.
Commissioner (social welfare) Gyan Prakash recounted the history of women’s movement and struggle for their rights across the world. He mentioned that Russia was the first country to announce March 8 as public holiday recognising their struggle for the rights. He urged the people to put a collective effort to achieve gender equality.
On the occasion, Padma Shri Awardee 2021 Hanjabam Radhe Devi was honoured and felicitated.
