11 smugglers nabbed

Imphal: Assam Rifles (AR) foiled smuggling attempt of Narcotics and Contraband items along Liaching – Parlon- Khongjol-chandel road axis in Chandel district on Wednesday.

In an operation, AR troops recovered large quantity of smuggled goods including poppy seeds bags, Burmese teak wood furniture, gengsin, beetle nut and Chinese cigarettes being carried in 5 Tata vehicles. Also, 11 smugglers have been apprehended along with the items. The total value of Smuggled items is approximately Rs 4.01 crore. Smuggled items and the smugglers were handed over to Chandel Police for further legal action, AR said.

The smuggled goods were carried from across the India Myanmar Border through Chandel for further carrying it to Imphal. The illegal trade is a threat to the countryโ€™s economy which is rampant in the region. Security forces relentlessly working to thwart the design of smugglers, it said.

Assam Rifles is playing prominent role for thwarting the increasing smuggling attempts by well-coordinated operations in North Eastern states, it added.
