Locust swarm at Yairipok: Agri officials provide pesticides

Imphal: Following a social media report about locust swarm reaching Manipur and villagers of Yairipok Khoirom Leikai, Thoubal district complaining of existence of local congregation of nymphal stage of grasshoppers at hill side of Garok, district agriculture officer and his team visited the village on Wednesday and handed over the Bio-pesticide Beuveria bassiana as recommended by ICAR and deputy director (E), Integrated Pest Manageµient Centre, Imphal.

It was also reported that a population of around 500 to 1000 nymphal stage were feeding on the leave of wild plants.

ICAR, Imphal Centre has stated that this pest damaging cultivated crops is uncommon. Nature of damage and their habitat from bushes and grasses to cultivated crops needs to be observed critically. If they become more aggressive and start attacking on cultivated crops ICAR recommends application of Beuveria bassiana or Metarrhizium anisoplae @ 5 ml per liter of water. If the pest attacks on cultivated, crop reach Economic Threshold Level (ETL) Phosalone 35 EC@ 2 ml per liter water can be applied, agricuture director Laltanpuii Vanchhong said in a press release.

The director instructed all concerned to follow the advice and report any sighting of locust/ grasshopper etc to the district agriculture officer and KVK centres.
