Pothashang News Service: Imphal, April 23, 2020: Following Court order the betel leaves seized at Imphal airport was scheduled to dispose on Friday at Solid Waste Management Plant, Lamdeng.
The Court of Duty Magistrate/Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West-I on Monday ordered disposal of the betel leaves.
The betel leaves were transported to Imphal by three cargo planes on April 4. The betel leaves were seized following public decry against its transportation saying that it was not the time to bring in non-essential commodities when people were in need of essential commodities during Covid-19 lockdown.
Office of the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Singjamei, Imphal West on Thursday intimated the designated officer of Food Safety Administrator, Imphal West for the disposal of the betel leaves.
The intimation letter signed by SDPO Laxmi Devi Thingbaijam submited that the Court has directed to dispose the seized items promptly and safely without causing any damage to environment and surrounding areas as well on Monday as per the standard procedure advised by the designated officer, Food Safety Administration, Imphal West.
It was also intimated that the Manipur Pollution Control Board has no objection in the disposal of the seized betel leaves at Solid Waste Management Plant, Lamdeng identified by the Imphal Municipal Corporation.
Since betel leaves are perishable in nature subject to rapid decay producing foul smell and may spread the infection of many diseases dangerous to life, the said betel leaves may be disposed by digging up a pit followed by burying the leaves in the pit and burning them by using mineral oil to ensure that the disposal is done strictly in an environment friendly manner without any adverse effect to the environment, it said.
Singjamei Police had arrested 5 persons in connection with the betel leaf cargo case, of which 4 were on judicial remand, while one had been granted bail.
