Pressing three main demands four students’ representatives of Biramangol College have launched their fast unto death at the college campus at Saombung in Imphal East.
The four students are Mayengbam Angam, games and sports secretary; Ningthoujam Roshan, magazine secretary; Lairenlakpam Sophia, secretary of debate and extension and Yumnam Poonam, secretary of girls common room.
Their demands are –formation of a governing body at once, payment of pending salaries of 24 months to teachers and the appointment of a regular principal by replacing the incumbent principal.
Biramangol College is the state’s oldest aided college but now it remains a college for a namesake and due to the absence of the governing body for the last two years, teachers of the college are left without any pay for the last more than one year. None of the teachers regularly conducted classes in the college having 2500 students losing their opportunity to study properly and there has been no regular principal, say the students.
The students said their genuine demand had not been look into by the authority concern which compelled to take up severe form of agitation. The four students took will continue fast unto death protest till their demands are met, added the students.
The students also cautioned to boycott second semester exams slated on May 9 if the education minister and authorities concerned fail to fulfill their demands ahead of the exams.
