Besides heavy rainfall the much awaited mega Shirui Lily Festival, 2017 was launched by Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh at Ukhrul, today.
Besides heavy rainfall and inconvenience due to lack of audience shed the festival people from different parts of the state gathered to enjoy the festival together.
Biren Singh said, the festival has materialised the long awaited dream of bonding love and brotherhood among the people in the hills and valley of Manipur.
He said the government has lined up various development programmes for Ukhrul and its people.
The state flower Shirui Lily was held up high in the festival spearheaded by the state tourism department.
Live music, cultural shows, beauty pageants, exhibits, folk songs, traditional dances and indigenous games and sports competitions like the Shirui Lily Grand Prix will form part of the celebration this year.
The festival aims to spread awareness about the endangered Shirui Lily and promote the district of Ukhrul as a must-visit tourist destination in Manipur through this festival.
Manipur Tourism recognizes the importance of Shirui Lily as the State Flower of Manipur and the event is a part of its efforts to develop and implement sustainable and responsible tourism in the State.
