Imphal, November 9: Manipur organic farmer representatives take part in the 19th World Organic Congress which was launched today at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida.
The Organic World Congress of IFOAM – Organics International is held every 3 years in a different country. It was hosted for the first time in India with the objective of bringing India in the world’s organic Map.
Altogether 24 farmers and eight officials of departments of Horticulture and Agriculture participated in the event and showcased varieties of organic products produced in the state.
This event provides a unique opportunity for the farmers of Manipur to realize the importance of organic farming and market avenues in India and abroad.
K. Debadutta Sharma, project officer, Manipur Organic Mission Agency, MOMA told Pothashang, “About 70 participants from abroad are taking part. We get buyers and consumer here. It is a big platform for our farmers to learn about different varieties exhibited here”.
Manipur produced organic vegetables and fruits ranging from ginger, turmeric, U-Morok (giant chilly), pineapple to oranges were showcased in the international fair in packets, fresh and on plants in pots.
“This getting together of the organic farmers from different countries is very encouraging to the promoters like us as well as the farmers, and boost up our hope in the field of organic farming”, said Asem Bhakta of Garden care, an organic farming promoter.
The aim of the congress and related activities (pre-conference, General Assembly, side-events and organic exhibition) is to share experiences, innovations and knowledge about the organic world, while giving the organizing country global visibility.
The 19th OWC was structured in four conference tracks—Main Track, Farmers’ Track, Scientific Track, and Marketing Track.
