Imphal, October 8: A blast suspected to be an IED occured this evening in the heart of Imphal at Ngamapal Phougeishangbam Leikai, about 400 meters away from the recently launched night plaza site along the Kangla moat.
The blast took place at about 6 pm , ahead of the night plaza which opens at 7pm.
It damaged a car’s window pan. The car bore registration number MN04A 4516. It’s splinter also broke window pans of a nearby building.
Umananda Loitongbam, the owner of the car said, “I heard the blsat while I was driving. I was nervous at the boom and found my car damaged.”
He was driving from the north along the Nagamapal road.
The blast took place by concrete slab below a building covering the Naga river.
Police rushed at the blast site to take stock of the blast.
Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh launched night plaza “Imphal Evening” on October 2 with the objective to promote nightlife in the state and attract investors and tourists. Biren Singh government wishes to depict the state as peaceful and free from militant violence, as any other city with a buzzing nightlife.
The government decided to keep the plaza open during the annual 10-day Sangai Festival, which commences from November 21 every year.
Located along the Kangla moat, the night plaza provides opportunities for boating and holding music concerts besides opening of 110 stalls including 80 food stalls.
