Imphal, September 30: The 121 birth anniversary of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat Day was celebrated today across the state with its main event held at Iboyaima Shuman Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal, organsied by Irawat Celebration Committee.
Today’s celebration marked the conclusion of the month celebration of the birth anniversary. It recalled the contribution of the social, political and revolutionary leader of Manipur in the human history.
Irabot/Irawat was born on September 30, 1896 and died on September 26, 1951.
Moirangthem Nara, state secretary CPI said the present society need to understand the vision and contribution of Irawat. The poor become poorer and rich become richer. Irawat saw this and the social leader joined politics. Irawat fought against the British and revolted against the colonial rule. He was a patron of unity and stood against discrimination on the basis of community and religion, said Nara.
He said, the birth anniversary of Irawat is celebrated in different parts of Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh. September is the most appropriate month to remember him, added Nara.
The day is celebrated by local clubs, civil society organisations at different levels. Patriotic song and recitation competitions were held during the Irawat Day observation month.
People from various sections of the society participated the celebration and paid tribute to the portrait of the socialist leader. A march past competition was held. Forty-two contingents took part in the march past.
The popular Manipuri song “Thangol adu maya thangu thouna” written by Neta Irawat/Irabot was played and performed during the celebrations.
