Deputy Chief Minister Shri Yumnam Joykumar Singh said, it is time to develop innovative ideas to generate more energy from alternate sources to meet the energy requirements in the State. He was speaking at the Distribution Function of High Efficiency L.E.D Reading Lamps under Integrated Rural Energy Programme, 2016-17 to four Zilla Parishads at Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound in Imphal today. The scheme is being implemented under Devolution of Powers to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in the State.
Deputy Chief Minister said, as the State is deficient in energy requirements, relying only on electricity or hydrocarbons will not meet the requirements. He said, keeping in view of such situation, energy generation from alternate sources mostly from solar power would be beneficial to a large extend. As power tariff also becoming high, rural population are very hard to get their energy requirements. Therefore, energy generation from alternative means should be enhanced to a large extent.
Shri Joykumar Singh further said, State Government has been trying to implement various programmes aims to give low cost efficient energy to the people for the last many years. Asserting that the scheme would be more fruitful if it cover more areas also despite concentrating on rural and hilly regions, he said, it will benefit mostly the learning community in the State. There have been a lot of things to be done to achieve the target, he maintained.
Urging the concerned department officials to co-ordinate with various other departments, Shri Joykumar Singh asked them to initiate awareness programmes so that the importance of Science & Technology is known to the masses. He said, research projects aims to benefit people can be taken up besides concentrating on Science Planetarium and Science Centres only. A brain storming session would also be helpful to develop ways to initiate new projects and successful implementation of the same.
On fund allocation and its deficiency, Deputy Chief Minister said, he had a detailed conversation with the Union Science & Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Varbhan last month when he visited Delhi and urged him to allocate more fund to the State. Minister assured him to extend all possible support to develop Science & Technology in the State, he added.
Shri Joykumar Singh distributed L.E.D. Reading Lamps to the four Zilla Parishads of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur & Thoubal districts. A total of 4,916 lamps, 1,229 lamps each to a Zilla Parishad were distributed.
Principal Secretary (Science & Technology), M.H. Khan said, the department has been trying to implement various programmes for the benefit of people. Despite having a meagre fund allocation, it has been trying to give maximum benefit to the people. He urged the department officials to work and co-ordinate each other so that the department would become fully functional and also many new projects can be taken up in the near future.
