Deadly drugs — Relife and Respifresh TR cough syrups — banned in Manipur

Imphal: Manipur Drugs Control Department has issued a public notice warning against the purchase, sale and consumption of Relife and Respifresh TR cough syrups.

“The Drugs Control Department has explicitly prohibited the purchase, sale, and consumption of these two drugs, citing serious health asks. Adulteration with diethylene glycol is highly dangerous, as this chemical is toxic and can cause severe poisoning, including kidney failure and death,” said S.Baleshwar Singh of State Drugs Controller, Manipur in a public notice issued on Friday.

The public notice said retailers, distributors, hospitals, and pharmacies in Manipur have been directed to remove this batch from stocks immediately and report if the product was supplied or sold.

“Consumers are advised to check the batch details and avoid usage. Anyone who possesses this product should submit it to the authorities for proper disposal.”

Healthcare providers have been urged to monitor for symptoms of diethylene glycol poisoning in patients who may have consumed the affected syrup. “Adverse reactions or suspected cases must be promptly reported to the Drugs Control Department for further investigation.”

Surveillance has been heightened across medical shops and hospitals in Manipur to prevent further distribution, the Drugs Control department said.
