Imphal: Former Manipur chief minister Nongthongbam Biren Singh has reacted to the busting of two individuals from Manipur in West Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, along with heroin powder with foreign currency as a large threat to national security.
The two individuals identified as Chuchung Serto (Kangpokpi) and Thanggin Towthang (Churachandpur), were arrested with over 512 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.5 crores, officials fo Meghalaya confirmed on Sunday.
According to Meghalaya police Rs 6,775 Indian currency notes, 3,000 south Korean won currency notes, 500 Kazakhstan Tange currency notes and 10 Kyat note of Burmese currency were also recovered from the two arrested persons.
Biren on his social media post said, “What’s more alarming is the recovery of foreign currencies including South Korean Won, Kazakhstan Tenge, and Burmese Kyat, suggesting possible international drug links.”
“This is exactly the kind of concern I have been raising for a long time and now it’s in front of us. The presence of foreign money and the scale of trafficking point toward a larger network that must be investigated thoroughly. This is not just about Northeast India, this is a national issue that affects the safety and future of our youth. We must speak up, act now, and ensure justice is done.”
The two individuals were arrested under (NDPS) Act by the Meghalaya police.
“Follow-up investigations are in progress to trace the supply chain and identify any larger network or cross-border links,” Meghalaya officials said.
