Imphal: Manipur Police disposed narcotics recovered in six months — 6.1 kg of Heroin powder, 86.87 kg of brown sugar, 22.18 kg of WY tablets, 0.047 of SP capsules, 36.079 kg of pseudoephedrine and 181.868 kg of Ganja at Shija Common Biological Waste Treatment Facility, here on Saturday.
State police take the drug issue very seriously. Various drives have been carried out for catching all these contraband items and various forms of drugs and psychotropic substances. Raids have been conducted in all parts of the state and quite successful in apprehending a lot of drugs in various parts of the state, specially in Tegnoupal, Thoubal, Senapati, Kangpokpi and Chudachandpur districts, said Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh.
The state police are in touch with DGP Nagaland, DGP Assam and DGP Mizoram, he said, stating that the drug issue as been a major problem in the northeast.
“We are seeing that we are making a combined effort because many a times it is seen that these persons who are indulging in all this have inter or intrastate connections also. Many of them are couriers and many a times we are just able to catch the courier.”
“We are identifying the network which is behind them, people who are financing them, people who are trying to take advantage of that because Manipur police has been working day in and day out,” the DGP said.
In the last two and a half years the drive against drugs did suffer a setback because of violence and police were engaged in slightly securing other things. “But now with some semblance of peace coming in and people cooperating with us, we have been able to catch lot of drugs,” he said.
The state police have been fighting against drugs under Prime Minister’s initiative and Home minister’s directive, he added.
“Some major cases which have networks throughout the country are handed over to the NCB. NAB, other security agencies also are involved in this and we as a united force are working on this,” the DGP said.
With the vision of a drug-free Manipur, the police chief appealed to the general public to feel free to give information to police they have any information regarding such people who are indulging in drug trade.
The DGP did not provide the worth of the disposed drug stating that it would encourage some people to indulge in drug trade.
