Tribute paid to AR martyrs

Imphal: Assam Rifles (AR) on Saturday paid tribute to two jawans who died in an ambush conducted by unknown armed miscreants on a 33 AR convoy at Nambol Sabal Leikai in Bishnupur district of Manipur on Friday.

A wreath laying ceremony was organised for the ‘brave’ soldiers who lost their lives in a ‘cowardly’ attack by unknown armed insurgents.

The two martyrs were Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman GD Kashav.

The ceremony was organised in presence of Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

GOC-in-C Eastern Command, GOC-in-C Corps, DGAR, Lt Gen Himalay Singh (Rtd), Lt Gen Nishikanta Singh (Rtd), DGP Rajiv Singh, GOC 57 Mountain Division, DIG BSF JS Birgi, and IG and all ranks of IGAR (South) among others attended the ceremony.

The event was organised by the AR at Viplove Tripathy Training Shed in Mantripukhri Garrison, Imphal in the evening to pay homage to the martyrs of Assam Rifles.

Five other AR jawans were injured and admitted at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

So far no group has claimed responsible for the attack.

In the meantime, Manipur Police recovered a van from Wangoi in Imphal West district this morning, which was suspected to have used by the armed miscreants to attack the AR convoy.
