Imphal: Five student representatives of Government Polytechnic, Takyel, Imphal, after about 20 days of agitation called on Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan Imphal, on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum highlighting various challenges concerning the Institute.
The students have been agitating since August 28 demanding appointment of adequate faculty members, non teaching staff and urgent improvements in the institute’s infrastructure.
The students locked the gate of the Institute on September 9. A team of Lamphel police opened the gate on Monday, which led to a heated altercation with the agitators. At least seven students were injured. Police detained seven other students in their custody and released in the early evening.
The students withdrew their protest for the day after they got an appointment to meet the governor.
The five student representatives drew attention to critical matters relating to shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff, safety concerns with the present academic infrastructure, and the need for necessary action on pending files and administrative approvals, said a governor’s office statement released on Tuesday
The governor gave a patient hearing to the students about their issues and informed that necessary action is being taken up, it added.
