Water current sweeps away 70-year-old man in Manipur, breaches several river banks in Imphal East, Thoubal

Imphal: Flash flood in Manipur has sweft away an old man in Imphal East district, river banks were breached in the district and thoubal district on Monday alarming residents in the district.

The flood victim was identified as a 70-year-old man, Md Ramjan of Khetri Awang Leikai. He was swept away by the Iril River in Kshetrigao.

Locals tried to rescue him, but strong currents prevented any rescue. He has not yet been found.

The riverbank breach occurred at Iril river by Kshetri Awang Leikai. The water flow was expected to bring Porompat, Ayangpalli, Wangkhei, Kongba and other parts in Imphal district.

Two other riverbanks have been breached at Thoubal river in Thoubal district.

A river bank at Yaingangpokpi area was breached earlier and caused flood bringing hundreds of houses under water.

The incessant rainfall showering since Friday has left many homeless. It destroyed paddy field, animal husbandry, poultry keeping and other agricultural farms.

People of Yaingangpokpi, Sabungkhok, Seijang, Leimakhong mapal, Telou Chana have been facing the havoc of flash flood since the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Above 500 household in the area were affected while SDRF team started rescue operation
