2 Arambai Tenggol members arrested with 9 foreign-made weapons for arms trafficking

Imphal: Manipur Police on Monday confirmed arrest two members of Arambai Tenggol from Imphal West district for allegedly possessing illegal arms intended for trafficking and other prejudicial activities on Saturday.

The duo were identified as Laishram Tondomba Singh, 27, of Ward No. 2, Wangjing Lamding Bazar, Thoubal district, and Tourangbam Amarjit Meitei, 20, also known as Yaima, of Lamding Mamang Leikai, Thoubal district.

According to police, a total of nine foreign-made weapons were recovered from their possession. They were seven HK33 rifles and two M4A1 carbine guns.

In addition, security personnel seized 28 empty HK33 rifle magazines, two Glock .45 Auto pistols with four magazines, eight empty M4A1 carbine magazines, 100 rounds of .45 ammunition in four cases, two luggage bags, four mobile handsets, two wallets containing Rs 4,430, two Aadhaar cards, and a four-wheeler with its key.

Both individuals were produced before court and remanded to nine days’ police custody, said police.

A senior police officer on the condition of anonymity said, “The recovery of the foreign-made weapons is a serious concern as these arms are not standard issue in India. This points to a wider cross-border trafficking network. We are investigating the weapons’ source and finding out those involved in the supply chain.”

The Arambai Tenggol on Monday clarified that activity of those two arrested with weapons are not connected with the activity of Arambai Tenggol. They did it for their personal interest.

It said it had repeatedly declared that Arambai Tenggol will not be responsible for any member involved in illigal activity other than ethnoreligious and social activities.
