Manipur DGP vows ruthless action on drug offences

Imphal: Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh has pledged uncompromising action against anyone involved in drug-related crimes, warning that even police personnel will face the law without leniency.

The drug menace is a serious threat not only to Manipur but to the entire Northeast region, the DGP said while talking to reporters on the sidelines of the Har Ghar Tiranga Bike Rally in Imphal on Tuesday.

“We are very strict, categorical and clear. Any person, whether a policeman or a civilian, found involved in drugs will face action. This concerns our youth and future generations. We will be absolutely ruthless in dealing with it,” Rajiv said.

He expressed gratitude to the bikers’ clubs and police personnel who joined the rally, saying their participation reflected a shared spirit of serving the nation.

The DGP’s warning comes a day after five Manipur police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of the Imphal East commando unit, were suspended for alleged grave misconduct in connection with a drug-related case.

The suspended officers are Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas Singh, officer-in-charge of Commando Imphal East; Sub-Inspector B. Debson Singh of Commando Imphal East; Constable Tarique Aziz of Commando Imphal East; Head Constable Md. Rakib of Commando Thoubal; and Jemadar Md. Amin Shah of the 7th Battalion, Khabeisoi.

Police records show that Sub-Inspector Debson was previously arrested in 2013 for transporting pseudoephedrine tablets worth over Rs 3 crore to Moreh, a border town in Tengnoupal district.

Following the arrest, the state government withdrew his Chief Minister’s Gallantry Award, and he was suspended at the behest of a students’ organisation.
