Imphal: Churachandpur district of Manipur, on Monday, witnessed a violent scene following a total shutdown imposed by Hmar Inpui, apex body of Hmar tribe (a sub-tribe of the Kuki community), in protest against the alleged assault of its general secretary.

The district magistrate imposed restrictions across the entire revenue district to prevent any untoward incidents.

A statement issued by Hmar Inpui on Sunday, said its general secretary Richard Laltanpuia Hmar, was allegedly attacked by unknown miscreants around 7:30 pm on the same day.

It alleged that while returning home, Laltanpuia was intercepted by the miscreants, blindfolded, and assaulted even after identifying himself inside the campus of VK Montessori School, Churachandpur.

Hmar Inpui has issued an ultimatum, demanding that those responsible surrender at its office by 10 am on Monday.

Hmar Students’ Association issued a statement on Monday announcing an emergency total shutdown across Churachandpur district, effective immediately and until further notice.

Following the shutdown, tensions escalated as protesters blocked Tiddim Road (National Highway 150, which connects Imphal to Mizoram via Churachandpur). Protesters used burning tyres, barricades, and other objects to obstruct the highway.

The district magistrate of Churachandpur, imposed a prohibitory order with immediate effect across the entire revenue district until further notice.

The Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF), a student body representing the Zo community, issued a statement on Monday, alleging that “Richard Hmar was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol and became a public nuisance, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the unfortunate events.”

Deputy commissioner of Churachandpur issued a public appeal on Monday evening, stating, “In light of the tensions between communities in our district, our attention has been drawn to incidents where disputes are escalating, leading to unrest and disturbances that threaten the peaceful coexistence of our citizens.”

The deputy commissioner urged the public to remain calm, exercise restraint, and refrain from spreading or believing unverified information or rumors that could further escalate tensions.
