Imphal: Security forces have arrested six cadres of Kangleipak Communist Party (Ibungo Ngangom faction) in Imphal West district and detained 26 Arambai Tenggol volunteers in Kakching district that triggered protests across the valley on Friday.
The six cadres of the banned underground outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (Ibungo Ngangom faction) were arrested from Koutruk Makha Leikai Church in Imphal West district during a search operation in the morning.
They were handed over to state police.
Assam Rifles apprehended 26 Arambai Tenggol Unit 26 volunteers, including their commander, in Kakching district this early morning. Protesters claimed that those detained were village volunteers.
Police said, “The 26 detainees were accused of involvement in extensive criminal activities and taken into custody early Friday.”
However, they were all later released following intense public agitation.
Among those detained, at least 10 were students appearing for the ongoing board exams. Under public pressure, they were released after being handed over to Kakching police station, and the remaining detainees were also freed later.
Protesters set fire to rubber tires and wooden barricades on streets across various valley districts.
Demonstrators forced the closure of markets and roadside shops in Imphal. Security forces remain on high alert, closely monitoring the volatile situation.
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said, “Village volunteers are not extremists. They were forced to take up arms to protect themselves after security forces failed to control the Manipur violence during the initial months. Both the state and central governments have failed in handling the ongoing crisis.”
