Imphal: Chief minister N. Biren Singh should resolve the ongoing crisis within a specific timeframe, if not, he should step down from his post instead of taking part in Kumbh Mela by ignoring Manipur’s turmoil, said a protestor during a demonstration at Seijang in Imphal East on Saturday.

A one-day sit-in protest at Saijang, organized by Seijang Meira Paibi Apunba Lup.

The protest was held as part of the demand that security forces must not arrest or harass village defense volunteers who are safeguarding their communities from attacks by alleged Kuki narco-terrorists.

“Is it more important to attend Kumbh Mela neglecting the Manipur crisis? MLAs and ministers living securely in the valley must understand that their safety is ensured by the village defense volunteers who guard the peripheral areas day and night, ” said a protestor.

“People of Manipur will not hesitate to attack the residences of legislators, including that of the chief minister.”

The protestor also demanded to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), stop the arrests of village defense volunteers, and focus on resolving the crisis by repatriating internally displaced persons to their respective homes.

“The chief minister must resign if he fails to meet the demands,” she cautioned.

Since the eruption of the crisis on May 3, 2023 at least 260 people were reportedly killed and over 60,000 individuals have been displaced.
