Imphal: Following the dead of three Assam Rifles personnel reportedly due to food poisoning, another soldier passed away at the hospital, here on Wednesday morning.
Doctors found that he was HIV-positive.
According to police reports, on Monday, six personnel from the 33rd Assam Rifles, stationed at Leimaram Waroiching in Kangpokpi district under New Keithelmanbi police station, were admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal. They showed symptoms of vomiting and unconsciousness.
One of the soldiers, Lance Naik Rama Shankar (F/3300339P), 59, from Janupur village, Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, was declared dead on Monday evening.
Two more personnel, Havildar Umesh Kumar (G/3300776), 49, from Pokhran village, Buxar district, Bihar, and warrant officer (GD) Phoolchand (G/3300518P), 56, from Indranagar Colony, Dehradun district, died in the early hours of Tuesday after receiving medical treatment, police said.
Three other personnel, including Rifleman Ghanashyam Singh (G/3300835), 48, from Atrarson village, Chhapra district, Bihar, Naib Subedar (GD) Gagan Singh (G/3300240), 59, from Aadarsh Shivaji Colony, Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, and Rifleman Laltlan Kima, 40, from Luangmual, Aizawl, Mizoram, were still undergoing treatment.
However, Laltlan Kima passed away on Wednesday morning at the hospital. Hospital authorities confirmed that while he was being treated, his blood sample tested positive for HIV.
An autopsy of Laltlan Kima was conducted at the RIMS mortuary on Wednesday. His remains will be transported to his hometown on Thursday.
The remains of Umesh Kumar and Phoolchand have been sent to their respective hometowns on Wednesday.
Sources reported that the Assam Rifles personnel had consumed illicit country liquor on Republic Day (Sunday), leading to their hospitalisation. Rifleman Ghanashyam Singh and Naib Subedar Gagan Singh remained under treatment at RIMS hospital.
