Imphal: Manipur Police on Friday rewarded two women for posting a video, on social media, of a man and a woman dipping green bananas into a liquid solution containing harmful chemicals before selling them at Naga Nullah, behind Ngari Galli, Thangal Bazar in Imphal.
Preety Thangjam, 33, wife of Anand Kumar, and Moirangthem Santhalembi, 47, wife of M. Nanayaima Bimol, both from Khurai Chingangbam Leikai Mayai Leirak, Imphal East, were awarded for uploading the viral video.
Based on the video Manipur police detained a woman street vendor and her companion.
The video that went viral led to the detention of two individuals, identified as Merai Ibecha Begum, 66, wife of Hesam, from Sora Mamang Leikai, Kakching district, currently residing in Yairipok Tullihal, Kaina Poirou Khongjil, Imphal East, and her accomplice Md. Maniruddin, 40, son of the late Karimuddin, from Yairipok Kaina Poirou Khongjil, Imphal East.
Ibecha claimed that an unidentified woman supplied the bananas around 7 a.m. on Tuesday and provided the chemicals for ripening. She admitted to hiring Maniruddin to wash the bananas in the solution.
The two detainees were presented before the sub-divisional magistrate, Imphal West, with a request to take legal action. The magistrate ordered them to be bound under Section 128 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, after which they were released.
Police took up an investigation to identify the unknown wholesale vegetable supplier who provided the chemical.
To prevent similar incidents, a special awareness drive has been launched in and around Khwairamband Market to educate vendors and the public about the harmful effects of such chemicals on human health.
Police have urged the public to report any such activities to the authorities.
