Imphal: Persons with disabilities (PWDs) on Wednesday protested against proposed construction of a Solid Waste Management plant, at the premises of the Spastic Society of Manipur, Tapokpi Bazaar, Narankonjin Langthabal Kunja, Imphal West.

The protest, organized by members, parents, PWDs, staff, students, and well-wishers of the Spastic Society of Manipur staged a sit-in opposing the construction proposal.

Protestors expressed their concerns over replacing the institution, which has been providing vocational and skill development courses for PWDs, with the waste management facility.

One of the protestors told reporters, “The proposed construction of the waste management plant, replacing this institution, is being carried out by individuals with vested interests. For us, this institution is a temple, as it imparts various forms of knowledge and training that empower PWDs to compete with others in society.”

He said the institution caters to 21 different categories of disabilities and urged the authorities not to displace it for the construction of the plant.

The protestor also appealed to all sections of society to support them.
