Imphal: Law of the land should prevail, anyone violating rules will have to face consequences, said Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh concerning the NIA’s case against Arambai Tenggol chief Korounganba Khuman.

The chief minister was responding to reporters on Monday on the sideline of the celebration of 5 years implementation of Inner Line Permit System in Manipur held with an interactive session with benefiaries of CMESS-special package to startups, entrepreneurs for employment of IDPs under Manipur Startup Scheme 2.0 at City Convention centre, Imphal on Monday.

“Those who violate the rule of law should face the consequence. It is not a question of one particular community or group. Everyone has to face consequences if they have done anything wrong”, said Biren.

A series of protests has been witnessed, particularly by women volunteers called Meira Paibis, against NIA’s case to  Arambai Tengol’s Chief.

“It is the beginning of safety of indigenous people in Manipur. Not just for protection, we are receiving good amount of revenues (from issuing ILP permits) around Rs 13 or 14 crores during the last four or five years even during Covid times and current crisis”, said Biren.

He said the government is worried about inmates staying in relief camp.

“Our primary duty is to empower them so that their day to day lives can be better. We have given them employment before

through some outside agencies. Today, through startups and govenment assisstance there will be more employment. Three hundred IDPs are getting job through successful new start ups.”

Biren said ILP was implemented in the three states — Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh which have nearly 90 percent of their population belonging to tribal communities. However, Manipur having nearly 40 percent of their population belonging to tribal communities, ILP system was extended by the NDA government led by Narendra Modi after critically assessing the uniqueness and peculiarity of our civilisation, culture, tradition etc. on 9th December, 2019. Several states like Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim etc are demanding for implementation of ILP, he added.

Speaking about the reports regarding abuse and discrimination against Myanmar refugees in the state, Biren Singh clarified that there are no reports or records on hostility and discrimination against the illegal immigrants in the detention centres or temporary shelters. He further stated that the state government has been providing temporary shelter, food, medicines etc. to the refugees/illegal immigrants. Biometrics of all illegal immigrants has also been captured, he added.
