Imphal: Residents of Lei-Ingkhol, in Imphal East, urged the government for alternative location with essential facilities within the jurisdiction of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.

The residents warned that they will not cooperate with the Cabinet decision made on December 3 if their demands are not met.

Presidents of the Lei-Ingkhol Youth Development Organisation (LYDO), Konjengbam Rocky, told reporters here on Thursday that the state Cabinet decided on December 3 to relocate all residents of Lei-Ingkhol to Langthrei Loukol, Keirao Bitra, Imphal East, which is against the residents.

Rocky explained that since Manipur merged with the Indian Union, Lei-Ingkhol has served as a settlement for individuals affected by leprosy. The present 156 households in the area are descendants of those individuals. Currently, there are 936 voters in the area, with 488 of them registered in Wangkhei Assembly Constituency.

Since 2004, the Manipur government has been attempting to evict the residents for the construction of the “Capitol Project” (High Court and Civil Secretariat). However, this place is deeply connected to the emotions of the residents, Rocky added.

If eviction is inevitable, an alternative site must be provided within Wangkhei Assembly Constituency, he demanded.

He said the government’s proposed compensation of 30×40 feet plots for each evicted household is inadequate. He demanded that each household be allotted 70×80 feet instead. “The government should provide new pucca houses under its housing scheme, along with facilities such as a community hall, public ground, crematorium, public pond, club, meira shang, and other amenities.”
