Imphal: Former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh has called for the immediate release of six Meitei internally displaced persons (IDPs), including three women and three minors, one of whom was a 9-month-old infant.
The six individuals went missing following an alleged attack by Kuki terrorists in Jiribam on Monday.
Ibobi, who is also the CLP leader addressed reporters at his Imphal residence on Wednesday. He urged those group who hold the individuals as captives be released immediately on humanitarian grounds.
He cautioned that failure to do so could result in severe consequences for Manipur.
Ibobi acknowledged the dedication of security forces to rescue the missing individuals, in resolving the situation.
He was accompanied by four opposition MLAs and leaders from the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). They raised their dissatisfaction to the Centre’s decision to assign the governorship of Manipur as an additional charge to the Governor of Assam.
Ibobi said with the acting governor currently out of the state, the opposition has been unable to discuss the ongoing issues with any state representative. He criticized the absence of a full-time governor during such a critical period.
He urged the Centre to take immediate action, suggesting that enforcing the rule of law and facilitating dialogue between the conflicting communities is the only way to restore peace.
He called on the need to prioritize peace in the state. “Congress party will not compromise on issues that threaten the integrity of Manipur.”
