Imphal: NTCP, District Health Society, Imphal East, launched the “Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 2.0” was launched with the objective to spread awareness about the harmful impact of tobacco use on school dropouts, at the district level on Thursday.
The programme was held at Panchayat Bhavan, Porompat, Imphal East.
Chief medical officer of Imphal East, Dr. Lourembam Indira, said despite various government efforts to curb the use of tobacco and its products, many people continue to use them without concern.
She mentioned that tobacco use is increasing among the youth, particularly among IDPs, according to surveys. However, she did not have specific data available at the moment.
The campaign has been launched to raise awareness about the health impacts and risks associated with tobacco use, she added.
A mental health awareness rally was also flag-off by the DC of Imphal East from the district office complex.
Students from the Saina Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Imphal East district police, and others participated in the rally.
Despite the awareness provided against tobacco use, tobacco products are sold with warnings. Why they are sold in the market, remains a question.
