Imphal:  No society can develop without safeguarding its culture, and people should take the initiative to protect and promote their cultural heritage, said imminent cultural activist Irengbam Shyamchand on Sunday.

Shyamachand expressed this at the 9th foundation day celebration of Sur Musical Institute (SMI) held at Aims Auditorium, Bamon Kampu, Imphal East.

Shyamchand urged people to learn about Manipur’s culture from renowned teachers who have mastered it, whilet hey are alive. It is essential to pass the knowledge to generations, he said.

“A society cannot develop if its culture is lost.”

The cultural exponent said, Nata Sankritana, a part of Manipuri culture, has been recognised as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of India” by UNESCO, which is a matter of pride for Manipur.

The director of SMI, Gotimayum Surchandra, said many talented youths who never get the opportunity to showcase their skills in their lifetime. The institute was established to provide opportunities for such talented youths.

He pledged to ensure that every student at the institution gets the chance to perform on stage.

Secretary of Guru Bir Nata Sankritana Academy, Khoisnam Kunjeshore Singh, was present at the function.
