Imphal: The tripartite talks held between the Government of India (GoI), Government of Manipur (GoM), and the United Naga Council (UNC) in New Delhi concluded on Friday afternoon without a significant solution.
The UNC has been demanding to rollback the seven new districts of Manipur, in December 2016.
In protest against the creation of these districts, the Naga body had called for a 48-hour total bandh across all Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur, starting on October 3. However, the apex body suspended the bandh after receiving an invitation for tripartite talks on the issue, scheduled for October 11.
A resolution issued after the meeting by the Naga apex body stated that the discussions mainly centered on the creation of the seven new districts and the UNC’s demand for their rollback.
“The meeting was cordial, with all parties agreeing that further progress would be achieved through sustained engagement. The objective of the talks is to resolve the issue in a time-bound manner.”
It was also agreed that the next round of talks will be held on November 15 in Senapati district, Manipur.
The Government of India’s delegation was led by A.K. Mishra, Advisor (North East), Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Government of Manipur was represented by Vineet Joshi, Chief Secretary, and N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), along with seven representatives from the UNC.
There have been several talks, but keeps extending.
In a recent session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, chief minister N. Biren Singh informed the House that the reorganisation of district boundaries is necessary, and that the government will take the required steps after consultations with colleagues, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders.
