Imphal: A Hindu temple situated at Senapati district of Manipur was lit up by unknown miscreant on Wednesday while the state receives external aggression threats.
Police have filed a FIR to apprehend the culprit and appealed to the public to refrain from spreading ‘fake narratives’ on social media.
Since, the Meitei-Kuki violence erupted on May 3 last year, Umang Lai Kanba Apunba Lup, a Meitei religious group, claimed earlier last year that, at least 393 Meitei temples and places of worship had been torched by Kuki narco-terrorists. The Indigenous Leaders’ Tribal Forum (ITLF) had earlier claimed that at least 253 churches had been burnt down.
Kuki miscreants also destroyed Meitei pilgrimage site ‘Thangjing Laipham’, located in the Churachandpur district. Many other historic temples were also demolished in Tengnoupal, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur and Imphal West district.
According to CCTV footage, the Senapati incident occurred at around 1:16 am on Wednesday. An unknown miscreant was seen entering the temple of Shri Shir Pashupati Nath, Senapati, and setting it on fire with the help of a tire. The same miscreant also looted the donation box of the temple and escaped from the spot.
The Naga Peoples’ Organisation and Karong-Senapati Town Committee ‘strongly’ condemned the alleged attempt to set the temple on fire.
“We respect the secular practices as laid down in the Constitution of India. Senapati is a peace-loving town where everyone practices their religion. Any elements that work to disrupt social harmony are highly condemnable.”
The statement further demanded to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
There has been apprehensions relating the Meitei-Kuki clash to religious conflict while sections of the society define the crisis as external aggression by Kuki terrorists to expand the Golden Traingle.
