Imphal, 30 Aug 2024: Demanding to recognise Meitei of Manipur as Scheduled Tribe (ST) and delete Kuki immigrants from the ST list, Meitei Leima, a women’s organisation will spearhead a protest rally in Imphal on Saturday.
The women body urged all sections of Manipur society to participate in a protest.
It appealed to take part in the protest by ceasing their work.
President of Meitei Leima, Salam Pravabati, told reporters at Khwairamband Temporary Ima Keithel, Imphal, on Friday, that Kuki groups are organizing a mass rally on Saturday with the intention of misleading and defaming the Meitei community.
She called on all sections of society to stand against the Kuki groups’ rally.
Pravabati said a doctored audio of CM Biren Singh recording is being circulated on social media without verification, and that the Kuki community is attempting to defame the Meitei community through this and by organizing the mass rally. She strongly condemned it.
She said the ongoing crisis was instigated by Kuki groups aiming to disintegrate the territorial boundaries of Manipur.
Other tribal groups withdrew their support for the Kuki cause after realizing that Kuki groups were misusing them for their vested interests, Pravabati said.
To divert attention from the real issue, Kuki groups are allegedly circulating doctored audio clips. With this motive, they are organizing the mass rally, she added.
Meitei have been defending against attacks by Kuki militants, who demand the disintegration of Manipur (separate administration), she added.
