Imphal: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) demanded legal action against those responsible in the inclusion of ‘Chin State of Manipur’ in the draft vision document 2047 by North Eastern Council (NEC), in five days.
Names of many places have been changed. Kuki leaders have coerced indigenous communities to adopt Kuki surnames. “Government should take legal action within five days, or else series of protest will be initiated against the authorities,” Cocomi said.
Coordinator of the integrity committee, Somorendro Thokchom, highlighted inclusion of Chin State of Manipur in the vision document is a direct threat to native populace of Manipur, as controversial term ‘Chin State of Manipur’ was notably mentioned in Chapter 3 of NEC’s draft vision document 2047.
Though, it was eventually removed following a strong objection by Manipur chief minister N. Biren to the Union minister of Development of North Eastern Region, Cocomi insisted that this was not mere oversight, he said.
“This error reflects a calculated attempt to undermine and confuse Manipur identity,” said Somorendro and added that this was not the first time of such error.
He mentioned about Bir Tikendrajit Airport in Imphal was mistakenly labeled as Imphal Airport Lamka, on air ticket.
Somorendro alleged that such actions are part of broader scheme, mentioning instances where Kuki leaders coerced indigenous communities like Ichum Kom, Kharam and Aimol near Nambol Leimaram in Bishnupur district, to adopt Kuki surnames like Haokip on thier Aadhar card.
He cited renaming of various places under central schemes in Indo-Myanmar border town Moreh, where traditional names like Bazar Lamkhai to Kuki Molaphai, Premnagar to Ngamkhaiveng and Heinoumakhong to Chinkinveng.
Khuga Reserve Forest incident was the latest. All such should not be taken easily, he said.
