Imphal: Opposition MLA K. Meghachandra urged the Information and Publicity minister to provide necessary protection and assistance to media personnel who are on duty in the field and to monitor the different threats given to journalists.
Meghachandra made the demand on Monday Assembly floor.
Expressing his concern over various threats received by media personnel, he informed the House that the Media serves as a bridge between the government and the public.
Media plays a major role in shaping society. It is unfortunate that some groups are threatening a media personnel of Imphal Times, an English publication evening paper, the editor of a local vernacular, and recently, a scribe of a local cable TV was physically assaulted by state police, the opposition MLA said.
He questioned the minister on the steps to be taken for the safety of media personnel who are discharging their duties in the field round the clock.
IPR Minister S. Ranjan, replied, regarding the case of the scribe from Imphal Times, that the police are investigating to book the armed miscreants involved in threatening him.
For the editor of the daily vernacular ‘Naharol Gi Thoudang,’ who faced a live threat, the government has provided security for his protection, the minister said.
In the case of the video journalist from the local cable TV, the state Home department has suspended the police officer involved in assaulting the journalist, he added.
